My Statements

「Post Human」

Antithesis of “Polarized Structure” in Modern Civilization. Where human civilization started and where it is headed to. The first humans to use “writing” to store and document data that was inside its brain to outside its brain is said to be the civilization of the “Sumer” which developed in 4000BC in the Mesopotamia region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers,current Southern Iraq.

This civilization appeared rather suddenly in the history of Homo Sapiens and possessed a wide range of sophisticated technologies. However, their origin is still to be unraveled. The oldest Sumerian writing (Cuneiform) is on clay tablets, and is said to have been used as the “receipt” for who and when harvested grains were exchanged.

More than 6000 years have passed since then, and the human civilization has greatly advanced. Further, we are now reaching an age when progress occurs with more speed and acceleration. We are already in the age of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity), where “the world has no definitive answers or a clear map of the future. ”Zero-Sum debates based on “Polarized Structures” cannot provide us with clear answers in this day and age anymore. We are being challenged to create a new set of values and world views that did not traditionally exist, including the co-existence of both poles and other novel options. More importance needs to be placed on sensitivity and aesthetics which lie on the opposite ends of rationality, efficiency and productivity. I believe the key to the overcoming the challenges we face today and creating new values is in the “indistinct gray zone” which lies between the two poles.

The goal of this artwork is to breakdown the existing “polarized values,” reflecting my belief that new creations based on double standards and double thinking is a necessity for the future, as well as my intentional focus on the ancient Sumer civilization. The title of my work is “Post Human,” based on the theme of “Humans and AI.” and I have aimed to use the piece as a medium to raise a question to the society on “polarized values.”
The reason is that the huge amount of big data that continues to grow outside of the human brain is under the dominance of the AI, and no longer on clay tablets.
